I had the same problem as you guys, either the BF4.exe crash with the error report or game froze between maps on "Transitioning". Sometimes I couldn't even get into or start a game for 2 hours straight, just crashing all the time.
I changed my motherboard (From Z68 to P67) and reinstalled windows 7 64-bit. Didn't install anything except all the newest driver for my hardware, BF4, Origin, Spotify, TeamSpeak and everything from windows update.
Now I rarely crash at all, maybe once-twice a day for the last 3-4 days, can play for hours without hiccups.
I followed some advice on EA's forum, unparked my cores and did very minor tweaking.
I will try Win 8.1 as well.
Reinstalling your OS is a classic, but sometimes it doesn't help at all. Just thought I'd post my story so you could draw your own conclusions. ^^
